Hello, welcome to our new blog post for the week! Like we mentioned on our last blog we would love to show you the team that works tirelessly to make the brand what it is. Over the next few weeks we would be publishing series of blogs introducing our team members, last time you got to meet our marketing manager but today we would like to introduce someone who is instrumental to the operations of the Akwan2fo brand. He is a man who has been with the brand since the beginning, has watched it grow and contributed to the growth a lot. We are introducing today our General Manager, Alhaji Bala!
Who is Alhaji Bala?
He was born Mohammed Weehiwiya Mustapha, but now popularly known as Alhaji Bala. His roots are from the Northern part of Ghana, Wa, in the Upper Western Region and he’s 47 years young. Bala is happily married and has a beautiful 14 year old daughter called Nadia. Alhaji Bala is the last of six children and has a lot experience working and living with people of different tribes and ethnic groups.
Alhaji Bala lived in Nigeria for four years and attended the famous Ahmadu Bello University in Northern Nigeria. This was an experience which he has described as having a positive impact on his life. Bala worked as a National Service Coordination in Assin-Fosu for many years and later established the Organization of Cultural Exchange Program (OCEP) together with a group of Dutch young professionals. OCEP was an organization facilitating volunteer projects in Ghana for youth all over the world. This is where he met our Director William as well.
Hobbies and Interests
Bala is a football fan; he enjoys watching football and also playing when he can. He is a great stiker with a big reputation in Fosu and every weekend he still shows his skills at the pitches in Fosu. Bala is a fan of the Dutch team AFC Ajax and Asante Kotoko S.C in Ghana. Besides playing and watching football he enjoys listening to Reggae music: “I really love Reggae music, I enjoy it a lot and it makes me feel really alive”. His favorite reggae artists are Jamaican artists Jimmy Cliff and Bob Marley.
Working with the Brand
Alhaji Bala has been with the brand right from the onset, he has worked with Akwan2fo fashion since when the brand was a collaboration with tailors up until this point, “William and I started the brand together in the time Ebola scared volunteers to visit Ghana. We saw a new opportunity and started just with a pillowcase. We started to learn about fashion and our social behaviour made it easy to find our way in the Ghanaian fashion scéne. I can really say we have a whole new profession now!”.
Bala currently doubles as the Director and Production manager in Ghana; he is in charge of ensuring that the production processes go on smoothly. He takes care of fabric shopping, equipment purchases and making sure that that tailors do a quality work; he takes care of quality checks and controls.
Bala believes that the brand has an effective and efficient strategy that has helped with growth and accomplishing goals whilst having an impact on the community. He says that the way William was passionate about making the Ghanaian community better, convinced him that William was a Ghanaian at heart.
Managing a Brand
Alhaji Bala believes that the quality of people in a team is very important because team work makes the dream work. He attributes the brand’s success to the tailors who are ready and willing to work tirelessly to make sure that deadlines are met and orders fulfilled “Our tailors are ready to work under pressure when an order needs to be filled, they always stand by us”. He describes his working experience as interesting, fulfilling and impactful For him an interesting day at work is seeing everyone working hard towards a common goal; which is making beautiful clothes.
Living and Working in Fosu
Alhaji Bala was born in Assin Fosu and has lived there almost all his life, he prefers living in a closely knit community where everyone looks out for one another to living in the big city where it is everyone for him or herself.
Brand Impact on the Community
Akwan2fo has launched a program that offers aspiring tailors an opportunity to learn their craft while earning an income. In this way they also get hands on experience working with the brand: “Akwan2fo has created employment opportunities in Assin and has also given under privileged people a positive mindset and a way to fend for themselves through our training programs”. The brand continues to provide opportunity in hopes of making the community around us better.
If you have any questions for Alhaji Bala, feel free to write them under the post. He would be very happy to answer them!
